Most wooden beds are held together with screws, brackets, and fittings. This works—until a screw loosens after years, a fitting starts to creak, or a thread in the wood strips. A metal-free bed takes a different approach: it holds together solely through its construction.
Why a bed without metal?
- Nothing loosens: Where there is no screw, none can come undone. Plug-in connections remain stable, even as the wood expands and contracts with humidity.
- No squeaking: Friction between metal and metal or wood creates noise. Without fittings, this source is eliminated.
- Easy to disassemble: Plug-in parts can be quickly taken apart for a move and reassembled without drill holes becoming worn out.
- Repairable: Every part can be replaced individually instead of disposing of the entire bed.
Some people want a bed without metal for personal reasons as well. For us, the focus is on durability, peace and quiet, and repairability.
How the plug-in bed is built
Our plug-in bed consists of solid fir, manufactured in Baden-Württemberg—without glue and without metal. It requires only a few components:
- Two runners support the bed and hold the slats and supports.
- Slats form the lying surface—one for every ten centimeters of width. An additional slatted base is not necessary.
- Felt joints sit between the slat and runner, two per slat. They cushion and ensure that wood does not rub against wood.
- Four supports determine the height of the bed.
- Four rubber discs under the supports keep the bed non-slip, even on smooth floors.

Three materials, each with a task
Fir is lightweight, resin-free, and domestic. This makes the bed easy to transport and low-odor. Felt separates the wooden parts from each other and absorbs movement. Rubber keeps the bed in its place. Read more about types of wood in our article Which wood is suitable for a bed?

A bed that remains adaptable
Because nothing is glued or screwed, the plug-in bed remains adaptable. The height can be changed using new supports, the width with new runners, and two beds can be joined into a family bed with connectors. Read more in our article A bed that grows with you.
Frequently asked questions
Does a bed without screws really hold?
Yes. The parts interlock with a form-fit, and the weight of the mattress and the sleepers presses the connections together instead of loosening them.
Does a plug-in bed squeak?
The felt joints between the slats and the runners ensure that wood does not rub directly against wood. This keeps the bed quiet.
Can I order individual parts?
Yes. Runners, slats, supports, joints, and rubber discs are available individually under Spare parts for the plug-in bed.
